In 2017 election of Nagarjun Municipality (Kathmandu district), candidate Mohan Bahadur Basnet of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 6,961 (36.54%) votes out of total votes of 19,051 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Krishna Hari Khatri of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) who secured 6,726 (25.86%) of votes. The rest of 13 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 5,364 (14.08) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Sushila Adhikari of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 6,871 (36.76%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Kalyani Khadka of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 6,791 (26.57%) of votes and came in second position. Other 5 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 5,027 (13.45) of votes.
As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 263 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 157 (59.70%) males and 106 (40.30%) females. Moreover, there were total 54 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 10 wards. Same as, total 96 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 48 females and 43 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
