In 2017 election of Durga Bhagawati Rural Municipality (Rautahat district), candidate Arun Kumar Shah of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 2,741 (36.40%) votes out of total votes of 7,531 and was elected as a Chairman. The first runner-up candidate was Ratinath Jha of Rastriya Janata Party Nepal (RasJPN) who secured 1,931 (18.80%) of votes. The rest of 12 candidates for the position of Chairman secured combined 2,859 (18.98) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Vice-Chairman, candidate Manju Devi of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 2,138 (31.60%) and was elected as a Vice-Chairman, while Ramsudha Devi Sudini of Rastriya Janata Party Nepal (RasJPN) secured 1,654 (18.58%) of votes and came in second position. Other 6 candidates who contested for Vice-Chairman secured combined 2,973 (21.97) of votes.

As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 155 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 97 (62.58%) males and 58 (37.42%) females. Moreover, there were total 32 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 5 wards. Same as, total 51 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 25 females and 25 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
