In 2017 election of Katahariya Municipality (Rautahat district), candidate Siyaram Prasad Kushwaha of Nepal Communist Party (Maoist) (CPN (M)) secured 4,163 (30.01%) votes out of total votes of 13,873 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Ajay Prakash of Nepali Congress Party (NC) who secured 3,612 (20.03%) of votes. The rest of 16 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 6,098 (21.98) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Nurjaha Khatun of Nepal Communist Party (Maoist) (CPN (M)) secured 4,994 (37.68%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Chunu Kumari Yadav of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 3,182 (17.44%) of votes and came in second position. Other 4 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 5,077 (19.15) of votes.

As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 271 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 171 (63.10%) males and 100 (36.90%) females. Moreover, there were total 56 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 9 wards. Same as, total 98 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 47 females and 46 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
