In 2017 election of Sabaila Municipality (Dhanusa district), candidate Bijaya Shankar Prasad Shah of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 5,200 (28.96%) votes out of total votes of 17,955 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Tej Narayan Yadav of Nepal Communist Party (Maoist) (CPN (M)) who secured 5,113 (22.08%) of votes. The rest of 14 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 7,642 (21.28) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Nilu Devi Kewat of Nepal Communist Party (Maoist) (CPN (M)) secured 5,265 (30.19%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Indu Devi Gupta of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 4,775 (21.03%) of votes and came in second position. Other 8 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 7,401 (21.22) of votes.

As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 381 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 241 (63.25%) males and 140 (36.75%) females. Moreover, there were total 83 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 13 wards. Same as, total 143 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 64 females and 65 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
