In 2017 election of Sunawarshi Municipality (Morang district), candidate Kali Prasad Das of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 5,473 (29.71%) votes out of total votes of 18,424 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Shyam Prasad Rajbanshi of Nepal Communist Party (Maoist) (CPN (M)) who secured 3,884 (16.25%) of votes. The rest of 8 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 9,067 (24.61) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Manju Kumari Rai of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 6,193 (36.17%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Mira Devi Das Kewraj of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 4,171 (17.89%) of votes and came in second position. Other 5 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 6,758 (19.73) of votes.
As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 244 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 152 (62.30%) males and 92 (37.70%) females. Moreover, there were total 53 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 9 wards. Same as, total 92 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 42 females and 40 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
