In 2017 election of Damak Municipality (Jhapa district), candidate Romnath Oli of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 10,806 (34.46%) votes out of total votes of 31,357 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Ram Kumar Thapa of Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) who secured 7,655 (18.16%) of votes. The rest of 13 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 12,896 (20.56) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Geeta Kumari Paudel of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 12,625 (40.69%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Regina Bhattarai of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 8,912 (20.42%) of votes and came in second position. Other 7 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 9,490 (15.29) of votes.
As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 289 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 179 (61.94%) males and 110 (38.06%) females. Moreover, there were total 64 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 10 wards. Same as, total 105 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 49 females and 47 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
