In 2017 election of Suryodaya Municipality (Ilam district), candidate Ran Bahadur Rai of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 12,919 (47.78%) votes out of total votes of 27,041 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Prem Lal Rai of Nepali Congress Party (NC) who secured 10,329 (25.85%) of votes. The rest of 4 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 3,793 (7.01) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Durga Devi Bhattarai of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 12,890 (47.58%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Khageshwori Paudel of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 9,927 (24.83%) of votes and came in second position. Other 4 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 4,276 (7.89) of votes.
As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 279 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 169 (60.57%) males and 110 (39.43%) females. Moreover, there were total 65 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 14 wards. Same as, total 108 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 53 females and 41 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
