In 2017 election of Deumai Municipality (Ilam district), candidate Surya Prasad Pokhrel of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 7,347 (47.98%) votes out of total votes of 15,314 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Hom Prasad Dulal of Nepali Congress Party (NC) who secured 6,645 (29.32%) of votes. The rest of 4 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 1,322 (4.32) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Pawi Maya Rai of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 7,387 (49.08%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Surya Maya Rai of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 6,390 (28.48%) of votes and came in second position. Other 2 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 1,274 (4.23) of votes.
As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 167 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 108 (64.67%) males and 59 (35.33%) females. Moreover, there were total 37 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 9 wards. Same as, total 65 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 29 females and 26 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
