In 2017 election of Ilam Municipality (Ilam district), candidate Mahesh Basnet of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 11,033 (50.86%) votes out of total votes of 21,693 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Himalaya Karmacharya of Nepali Congress Party (NC) who secured 9,268 (28.32%) of votes. The rest of 5 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 1,392 (3.21) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Sushila Nebang of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 10,946 (50.54%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Chanda K.c (karki) of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 9,254 (28.38%) of votes and came in second position. Other 4 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 1,459 (3.37) of votes.
As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 225 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 142 (63.11%) males and 83 (36.89%) females. Moreover, there were total 48 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 12 wards. Same as, total 88 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 40 females and 36 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
