In 2017 election of Halesi Tuwachung Municipality (Khotang district), candidate Evan Rai of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 4,397 (42.06%) votes out of total votes of 10,455 and was elected as a Mayor. The first runner-up candidate was Khadendra Rai of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) who secured 3,999 (26.93%) of votes. The rest of 5 candidates for the position of Mayor secured combined 2,059 (9.85) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Bimala Rai of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 4,486 (42.96%) and was elected as a Deputy Mayor, while Manisha Rai of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 3,922 (26.27%) of votes and came in second position. Other 4 candidates who contested for Deputy Mayor secured combined 2,034 (9.74) of votes.
As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 212 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 127 (59.91%) males and 85 (40.09%) females. Moreover, there were total 42 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 11 wards. Same as, total 79 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 40 females and 38 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
