In 2017 election of Maiwakhola Rural Municipality (Taplejung district), candidate Rajan Kumar Thaklung of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 1,818 (45.54%) votes out of total votes of 3,992 and was elected as a Chairman. The first runner-up candidate was Dambar Bahadur Limbu Chongwang of Nepali Congress Party (NC) who secured 1,219 (20.98%) of votes. The rest of 3 candidates for the position of Chairman secured combined 955 (11.96) of votes.
Similarly, for the position of Vice-Chairman, candidate Kaushila Thaklung Limbu of Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) secured 1,951 (49.58%) and was elected as a Vice-Chairman, while Sujata Limbu of Nepali Congress Party (NC) secured 1,084 (18.42%) of votes and came in second position. Other 2 candidates who contested for Vice-Chairman secured combined 900 (11.44) of votes.
As illustrated in the pie chart, there were total 102 candidates contested in various positions with gender ratio of 64 (62.75%) males and 38 (37.25%) females. Moreover, there were total 21 candidates contested for ward chairman positions in 6 wards. Same as, total 38 candidates had contested for ward member positions while 18 females and 16 females from depressed group (dalit) had contested for female member position in each ward.
